____The skills I hold pride in having is honesty and loyalty. I will be open and honest with my opinion and thoughts whether they be accepted or not. I know as a woman in New Hampshire I am not recognized as having knowledge of political issue’s. Although women are not encouraged to be outspoken on such a topic, I feel that with a subject regarding my future and the future for many generations, it should not rely only on the opinions of men. Everyone in New Hampshire is being affected by the decisions and actions taken by those men in higher positions such as the congress. My “decision to remain loyal stemmed from long, hard scrutiny, close examination through logic, and reasoned argument (Borden, 1).” I believe the result of separating from Great Britain will be disastrous. Has anyone considered what would happen to us when our protectors, leaders, and role models are gone? Wanting reconciliation, I am a loyalist because I depend on Britain for economic support and the patriots are supporting war. We have always looked to Britain as an example of how to govern and run our colonies. To separate from Britain is to wonder off into the unknown. All those promises and idea’s the rebels claim are fantasies with no guarantees.
____I personally do not want to venture into the unknown, why would I support an idea when I can stay loyal to what I know and what I am happy with. Governor William Franklin wrote, “you can never place yourselves in a happier situation than in your ancient constitutional dependency on Great-Britain. No independent state ever was or ever can be so happy as we have been, and might still be, under that government. (Borden, 23)” Colonists are happy under British government, because it has secured our trade and made us economically prosperous and succeed as a colony. Parliament has given us our freedom and only stepped in when thought necessary. Joseph Galloway insists “there was only one legitimate source of American rights, and that was the British constitution. (Nelsen, 59)” The British system works for America, they have let each colony govern themselves while still having the same right Englishmen do. A friend of mine in Maryland, William Eddis, once said “the present unhappy contention between the mother country and her colonies is a matter of the deepest concern to every honest, every feeling mind; it is, therefore, the indispensable duty of every friend of society, to study and pursue those methods, which may lead to a perfect reconciliation, an the establishment of a permanent union between Great Britain and America. (Borden, 21)” America would be better off in hands of Great Britain a secure stable empire.
____Although the best action America could take would be to compromise with Britain and reconcile with Parliament but all the patriots do is rebel. Thomas Paine says in his document of the American Crisis that the patriots “have so earnestly and so repeatedly sought to avoid the calamities of war, by every decent method which wisdom could invent.” This cannot be true, patriots have been rebelling against every act or law sent by Parliament. Loyalists’ are being tarred and feathered, property being ceased, and people are being whipped. William Eddis states,” When there is no prospect of such calamities, why are we to form ideas of battles and of slaughter? (Borden, 22)” This proves the violent ideas and opinions of those patriots acting out against Britain. For example, the Boston Tea Party, a mob of rebels dressed like natives dumped 45 tons of tea in the ocean. That happened only a colony away from my home in New Hampshire. The result of their outrage was shutting down the port in Boston, which caused even more rage. Some actions that are being taken are not gaining any benefit for America. Thomas Paine and other Patriot leaders talk about gaining freedom and liberty, but with violent rebellious actions, America loses freedom and liberty.
____In the final analysis, if America separated from Britain, my home would no longer be in New Hampshire. I could not imagine living in a colony that is claiming independence, with no real knowledge of what that independence includes. With British government gone, America would have to create an entirely new form of power and government. There are no promises or guarantees who will be in charge, how the colonies will be run. We will be lost without Britain at our side to guide us and keep us stabilized. America will have no protection of any kind, if we were ever to be attacked by a powerful nation we would certainly lose. I for one want to stay loyal to Britain, the country I know will always provide reassurance, unlike independent America with so many unknowns.
